pay a visit to your typical indian newsagent and you would have a hard time finding where they put their hifi magazines. they are always located at one inconspicuous corner where magazine of less "importance" are. even when you do find them, there is at most one or two copies available. such is the sad state of hifi magazines in malaysia.
most of the times, these magazines are left unsold and they would be sent to the 2nd hand bookshops, like the one in amcorp mall, and be sold at 1/3 of its original price. even at that price, there are not many takers. the best selling hifi magazine in malaysia, as far as i know, is taiwan's "audio art", which is absolutely one of the best in the world in terms of photography, sheer volume of articles and intellectual contents.
fact it, today's audiophiles are no longer reading hardcopy hifi magazines, save for the very few minority hardcore readers. there are many reasons for this phenomenon, chief of which are the widely available internet resources and lack of credible reviewers.
but many local dealers argue that those who read from internet are not the real buyers. real buyers are those who still read hifi magazines. i could understand where they are coming from but i feel that the internet readers and buyers alike would boom in the next 3-5 years in malaysia, judging from the awareness of local dealers and audiophile community towards online hifi resources. a case in point, local hifi trading blog, hifi4sale, has somewhat "forced" even the most internet-handicapped dealers/audiophiles to go online and post their 2nd hand items for sale. this is a very encouraging sign indeed.
many hifi magazines are barely surviving, with diminished readership, eventho their advertising revenue are still stable. many manufacturers still want the distributor to allocate a certain budget for advertising in hardcopy hifi magazines. in the end, you may end up with hifi magazines that no ones want to read or bother to buy and take it home. and this is already happening today.
it is with this awakening thought that i have decided to suspend my av xpress infinitely and concentrate solely on my blog.
sorry for the silence for the last few days. please give me some time for my brief report on the KLIAV show.
finally, for av xpress readers outside kl, hope we make it up for you by providing a pdf version in rapid share and youshare!
you can print in color printer (if you want to appreciate the beautiful ads) or black and white if you just want to read the articles.
interesting to note that this is the best printed issue of av xpress so far because we have terminated the previous printer and now changed to a new one for good. the quality of print (as well as our ad design) is very good, s-o-o-o-o much better than our competitor.
some complained that it is still too thin. well, i know, i know. we have limited resources and it is a free bulletin. also, the cost of raw paper has increased by 40%, just so you know.
in future, we would reduce drastically the number of hard copies and hope that most of you would download from here or here
enjoy. remember to give us some feedback!
[apologies: the pages are not sequenced properly due to our conversion method. please arrange it based on the page number]
another issue of av xpress ready for distribution in the hifi show next week!
i struggled with every issue of publication because i did everything myself (except the graphics la) but every time i look at the finished product, i feel good that i did it.
av xpress is not a magazine of international standards (nor it wants to be) but a big effort from someone who really wants to share with you people with a single objective in mind - to have fun in hifi. also to let you in on an open secret, i really don't care how many advertisers are with me!
in the past, i have always injected humor in the magazine but later i realized that many audiophiles are not funny people; they failed to appreciate the humor in the magazine; they really wanted hardcore stuff! so you want hardcore, i give you hardcore. so this time - we have hardcore hardware reviews by hifi kaki and master ken!
this time we are going to have a downloadable pdf version in this blog!
yay!
i am not sure if my news is early or late, cmy audio visual is now the national distributor for usher loudspeakers. originated from taiwan, usher speakers have made quite name in the international hifi scene for the past 2-3 years. i hope to get a pair to review soon.
onto more exciting news. my earnest intention to seek a suitor for av xpress has finally been met. a local music label is keen to collaborate with me to "bring av xpress to another level" by beefing up the music contents, much like the "playback" magazine, the online music-cum-hifi journal owned by TAS. yes, we want to target younger readers yet not forgetting the hardcore audiophiles.
av xpress is my baby but i have to admit that i didn't start with much ambitions. i am so excited that i have now got a capable partner who is willing to max out the potential that it deserves.
with this collaboration, it also means that i have got viable funds and channel to do more audiophile albums in the near future, isn't that great?
in business, once you can't handle it alone it is best to seek partnership or collaboration. i have been waiting for this day to happen.
you shall hear more about this collaboration in this space here.
i am excited, are you, malaysian audiophiles?
the review panel comprising of hifi kaki (left), master ken (middle, the fattest) and maggielurva (right, the most handsome)
for the next issue of av xpress (to coincide with KLIAV 2008), i am going to do hardware reviews in a very different and entertaining way. the review team will comprise of myself, hifi kaki and master ken. each of us will give our opinions - as usual, keeping to our short and sweet style (and no BS)- despite our individual biases, inclinations, aspirations, tastes, philosophies and beliefs in hifi. i remember perfect pitch (the sun's pull-out in the late 90s) used to do it this way, with jeffrey tan (the no-BS editor) making sidebar remarks for every review that his staff did.
and we are gonna have a 3-way dialogue a la stereo sound of japan. it is gonna be fun! maybe i can post the dialogue online here!
it is gonna be fair too since each of us is vastly different in the kind of things we look for in hifi. and for your readers, you can rest assured that you get to read a balanced review.
so far, items lined-up for the next issue: (there may be more coming)
[1] audio magic stealth mini reference power line conditioner (audio creations)
[2] siltech S.A.T.T. forbes lake interconnect (CMY audio and visual)
[3] esoteric sa60 universal player (dong fong audio)
[4] crytal cones (audio art)
we hope you like this new direction!
say no to politics in hifi
i know it will come. the day has come. the demands from the dealers on the (relative) positioning of their ads; the (unreasonable) expectations from their ads etc. etc.
and i hate all these. i really do. i am not a politician and i am not good in licking the balls/asses of these dealers.
chinese has a proverb - those who eat salted fish must be able to withstand the thirst. in this case, the salted fish i ate is bloody salty! i feel like throwing up all this salted fish i ate.
many dealers still don't know that i do av xpress not for the money, but for the passion and satisfaction of having a voice in this industry. some compare me with my sole competitor - the local chinese mag with a 14-year history behind it and practically monopolizes the market - saying that i am not politically sensitive and tactful. hey, that guy depends on the mag for his livelihood yeah and i don't!
i am thinking of making av xpress totally independent. as long as someone is willing to sponsor the printing cost and contribution fee (for my writers), then i am willing to do it as a non-profit project. you know of any organization who is willing to sponsor RM5K per issue? or you readers can form a common fund (tabung av xpress) for av xpress? only then i can be free of all this crap and politicking. only then i can be a really strong voice in the industry.
on the brighter note, i am venturing into event organization. somebody with good track record is inviting me to invest in his event company. and he has already a mega act lined up in october. i am game cos music and entertainment line is my calling. with music/cd business being a sunset biz, live concert is the way to go. at least, you can't duplicate/pirate a live concert. music lovers are willing to pay for live concerts.
i shall be announcing the act and sell tickets in this blog soon, once we have confirmation from the agent.
it is really strange, readers who tell me great things about av xpress are genuine music lovers and not hifi nuts. i guess the reason why music lovers like my mag is because it has good music contents and i don't dish out hardcore hifi stuff that would frighten them off. you know, music lovers don't touch the typical hifi mags.
on the other hand, the true hifi readers are crying out for more hardware contents like reviews and shoot-outs. i have to strike a balance here but i am all too willing to please. starting next issue, i will have a few reviews on hardware like cd players and cables. my condition for the dealers is they must first break-in for me cos i don't want to spend my expensive tubes for breaking-in.
sourcing for worthy reviewers in malaysia has been almost impossible. i am speechless as to why this is so. are people not confident of their english or they just don't see fun in the whole exercise? i now have to source elsewhere, from overseas and i have gotten a few responses, which is good.
i know i can't please all with av xpress. there are still dealers that complain about the lack of "thickness" of the mag. they don't seem to realize by virtue of it being free, i have a cost issue to control. some even suggest to me to cut and paste articles from internet just to make up the "thickness". ludicrous suggestions, i must say.
ultimately i can't stop emphasizing the importance of music over hifi. don't be a slave to hardware. your music must be better than your hifi.
we are gaining momentum! i feel a deep sense of satisfaction distributing av xpress free copies to dealers, even to those who don't advertise with us. i feel like a santa claus dishing out goodies to all and sundry!
this issue, av xpress goes back to colour (cover pages) again! many have complained about the black-n-white colour scheme in past issues! we heard you and we promise we would never revert back to black-n-white again!

we won't advise getting from starbucks cafes as they are grabbed up almost instantly. by right, customers cannot take home any in-store mags but many starbucks' customers ignore this regulation and just take home any mag they fancy. many readers have complained that they can't find av xpress in starbucks.

calling potential writers, especially expat readers who want to contribute - we are short of contributors/writers and you can play a part in this very fun and rewarding project that is av xpress!

at the same time, we would also like to announce that av xpress will be out next tuesday, 25th march 2008.
it has been almost a year since av xpress' birth. i still receive occasional phone calls from dealers telling me that they want to advertise in av xpress.
but when i start telling them my marketing approaches, the positioning of the magazine, the distribution network, most of the times, it drew a blank on their faces. they simply don't understand (and appreciate) things like "independent" magazine, non-traditional distribution network and online marketing.
traditionally, a magazine needs to please advertisers because they need advertising revenue to survive. the magazine's publisher/editor needs to "spend quality times" with the advertisers to improve PR and to get the sales. and more often than not, the publisher needs to write pretty things about their products. the publisher/editor not only needs to be a good sales and marketing person, he also needs good PR, must be thick-skinned, able to handle the politics of the business and has tons of patience and perseverance. which, sadly, is not my forte. well, i am a pretty good marketer and i have decent PR; it is just that i don't sell out or please anyone, especially people i don't particularly fond of. to know oneself is half the battle won, haha.
call me unorthodox, un-business savvy, anti-establishment - i don't think that's the way i want av xpress to be. maybe i don't need to depend on av xpress for my livelihood, i dare to be bold about my approaches. that's cool.
local dealers, by and large, don't understand online marketing and they don't give two hoods about online audiophile community. true, the buying ones (mainly middle-aged audiophiles who are not internet savvy) are still shunning away from internet. but things are going to change with this blog and others like hifi4sale blog garnering loyal readers.
that's why i think av xpress is ahead of its time, in the malaysian context at least. given time and persistence, it will be a force to reckon with, that's my personal belief.
yes, you hear it right, av xpress has been approved as the inhouse bulletin in all starbucks cafes all over malaysia! give me five!
which means, starting next issue (15th october 2005), you can collect your free copy at any of the 88 branches nationwide.... isn't this great? isn't that wonderful?
which also means, we have to tailor the contents to cater more to the target readers of starbucks. for starters, we need to beef up the music section. we will be looking high and low for music reviewers who are willing to write for a song. anyone you know? nah, we can't afford daryl goh or martin vengadesan (from the star):-)
we are too elated to even think of what other contents to entice the young readers of starbucks...
any suggestions?
yes, we have gone black and white, in newsprint no less! and it is free-of-charge once again!
this marks the birth of the first "independent voice" in the hifi industry in malaysia. it is all the more noble because we have become a non-profiteering publication.
2,000 copies will be circulated free at the KLIAV starting friday.
some of the contents:
- convergent entertainment devices (with focus on ps3)
- why midbass is important in car audio
- 2nd hand hifi in malaysia
- personalities in hifi show - a humourous look
- excitement in kampar, perak
- CJ audio on hifi accessories
- short review on stage III magnus interconnect
- choosing the ultimate speakers
many thanks to the following advertisers, for making this issue possible:
- enzer (monsoon)
- audio note
- CJ audio
- C & O audiophile enterprise
- av synergy
- centre circle audio
- home audio design
- dong fong enterprise
make sure you pick up a copy at the show!
keep the passion going!

famous journalist-cum-writer lam yuet (lin yue) from sin chew jit poh interviewed me on the "trials and tribulations" of starting av xpress.
article appears on the 9th july 2007 monday edition of sin chew.
i started playing hifi in 1988 and i have seen the industry going thru major ups and downs. this current scene we are seeing now, is the worst of it all. very few people are playing hifi, even fewer people are buying. generally hifi has been relegated to a very niche and exclusive hobby. as a new and late-entry-into-the-scene publisher, i don't see the light at the end of the tunnel. i shudder every time i think of the future of hifi and hifi publication in malaysia.
today i had tea with one of my dealers. he regretfully told me that he is considering closing down his business. "this market is deader than dead; i am losing money every month", he lamented. another dealer in city square told me that he is fed up of having no customers visiting his shop. the signs are all there.
what can we do? very little or a lot, depending how to see it.
after some serious soul-searching. we want to turn the table around.
it is going to be like this:
the magazine is going to take on a new and unprecedented direction. we are going to become the 1st ever totally independent, "underground", free, and self-financed magazine in malaysia, with very little ad revenue. in particular, we want to help those small dealers with no advertising budget.
to drastically cut down costs, we are going to be using newsprint (newspaper quality) and it will be in black and white tone. we will write whatever we feel like; promote and review whatever we feel like; publish whenever we feel like (no deadlines nor fixed frequency)and we won't even bother to edit our articles. it is going to be raw, rough but original and spirited.
there will still be ads. availability of the ad space will be on a first-come-first-served basis. the payment of the ads will be totally by voluntary donation. the proceeds of the donation will go towards funding the printing costs, which is peanuts compared to using the kind of quality paper now. me and my contributors won't get a single sen from writing. everything is voluntary.
sceptics (there are many) will ask: aren't you silly in doing this kind of charity? you think that all dealers will appreciate your efforts? sceptics will remain sceptics la. just like if you don't believe that cables make a difference, you won't be convinced even if they do. actually, that is simply because your system has not enough resolution la :-)
we cannot always take and take from the society. sometimes, it is good to give back. it is good for one's karma. and it also makes you a better person.
this is our greatest service to the hifi industry in malaysia. a record, if ever there was one.
to those who still complain after this (about our standard of english, our distribution, magazine not thick enough etc etc), we will just stick up our middle finger and tell you where to go. oppss...sorry for a momentary lapse of manner and refinement :-)
reformasi!
i am getting ahead of myself actually, but i intend to change the USA-A4 size of av xpress into a tabloid format like the edge (financial) magazine.
i am waiting for quotation from my printer on this new format, and i have a positive feeling that it is going to be slightly cheaper than USA-A4 size due to less pagination.
it is going to be cool to have a tabloid like format for an audio publication, at least no one has done it. i am not talking about pullout like the sun's perfect pitch or the star's audiofile.
another great thing about making it a free magazine is that we would have no pressure on the contents, or even on the standards of english. one of my writers hates to write in journalistic english because he thinks it is too boring!
but my only concern is distribution, as i have to distribute them manually like what i did for first issue, which can be very tiring. vishal, the largest magazine distributor in malaysia, has done a great job with this issue. most dealers told me that they can find the magazine in many indian newsagents nationwide.
i may appoint a runner to do the distribution for me.
anyway, i have spoken to a couple of dealers and they are quite open about my change of format, as long as the magazine can influence the market and people want to read it, that's their biggest concern.
i am going to announce it to the rest of the dealers once i am firm on this.
too much pressure, too little help forthcoming, too niche market, too little appreciation, the need to survive..... these are the many reasons for the revamp of av xpress.
i initially conceived av xpress to be nothing more than a free adzine, then i got ambitious and decided to turn it into a commercial magazine, which turned out to be such a burden on my shoulder. truth is, working solo, part-time mode no less, i just can't handle a magazine!
first, there are just not enough good writers around. soliciting for articles is as good as begging. bear in mind that all my contributors have full-time jobs and writing to them is just a hobby - they write only when they have time. for me, i need commitment! i can't afford to have contributors who write for fun. i have a certain quota of pages to fill every issue.
second, the hifi market is not great. soliciting for ads is not easy, especially when you have a conscience that you can't guarantee that by placing an ad, sales would come. i don't like BS. i want to give value to my advertisers. many dealers are still sitting on the fence due to the fact that we are a new magazine and we have no track record. it's ok, we can understand that.
third, printing cost for a magazine is exorbitant! almost 80% of my ad revenue goes to printing. it just does not make sense to me that i work so hard so 3 months and all my earnings go to paying the printer. what kind of warped logic is that?
fourth, many of you are not even willing to pay RM3! i don't know what to say about this except to shake my head and sigh.
so, i have decided to change it to a "express news" format, which means:
1) free for all, available at all the usual record and hifi outlets nationwide
2) limited pages ( < 20 pages) with limited ads, which focuses heavily on new product info and industry update - everything about malaysian hifi scene. still no reviews, no BS
3) monthly publication, so no more complaints about the long wait
truth be told, when i first thought of the name "av xpress", i wanted it to be an express news bulletin that brings the latest news on a frequent basis. at least the new format does justice to the name. just look at it as the "media focus" (popular adzine circulated in damansara and kepong area) for hifi, only much more classy in presentation and printing quality.
the next issue is to be launched end of july, before the KLIAV show!
note: this article is taken from this issue of av xpress for your reading pleasure!
We dedicate this section to the hottest, best-selling and most desirable hi-fi in Malaysia for the last quarter. The accuracy of this information may be questionable as it is solely obtained from the audio grapevine and may invite arguments or debates. However, the true spirit of this article is to share the excitement and in turn, we hope to excite the local hi-fi industry. Believe it or not, we try to be impartial and are not affiliated to any particular dealer or manufacturer.
Audio Research Reference CD7 CD player
Coming from a highly respected tube amp manufacturer that does not specialize in digital playback, Audio Research Reference CD7 CD player has done extremely well since its launch. In fact it is the first digital product from Audio Research to justify the "Reference" badge.
Following the remarkable success of its reference-status sibling, the flagship Reference 3 preamplifier, the same ground-breaking technology is employed with a gain stage taken directly from the Reference 3 and it also incorporates the latest proprietary capacitor technology found only in the Reference series components.
The good news to ARC supporters is that now they can finally purchase a full-suite of Reference products (save for loudspeakers) and proudly proclaim that they have the best of everything-under-one-roof system in the ARC universe and beyond.
Audionet ART G2 CD Player
Relatively low-profile, this German audio marque has caused quite a stir in the local market recently. Audionet products are developed, produced, and distributed by Idektron GmbH, a company that has its headquarters in Bochum, Germany. When it was founded in 1994, Idektron was a spin-off of Ruhr University Bochum, one of the leading universities in Germany, and was dedicated to making medical instruments. It now makes a nearly full range of audio products.
The ART in "ART G2" stands for Aligned Resonance Transport, a proprietary technology that decouples transport unit and boards as well as the clock generator. The G2 stands for Generation 2. It is a direct-drive top loader. The transport is mounted on a suspended, 22-pound slab of granite.
If the popularity of the G2 continues to grow at this speed, it won’t be long before Audionet becomes a formidable audio brand in Malaysia.
Promitheus Audio TVC Passive Preamplifier
Nick Chua (see interview in the “Personality Profile” section), the local 26-year-old young man who builds a superb value-for-money Transformer Volume Control (TVC) passive preamplifier, did not mince his words when he admitted that “TVC sells to international markets in huge volumes through online channels”. To find out what the fuss is about, just google “TVC”.
The key strength of the TVC is its impedance matching. It allows listeners to hear greater inner detailing and micro dynamics, a more natural timbre, and greater airiness, compared to conventional passive preamps.
Competing well with products 3-4 times the price of his TVC, Nick has certainly scored a minor victory in the price/performance war for passive preamplifiers. More importantly, the Promitheus Audio TVC heralds a new era for Malaysian audio designers who have shown that they are ready to take on all challengers in the global arena.
For further discussion on Nick’s remarkable TVC, check out the humongous 150+ page thread on the Audio Circle forum.

there is a saying - "don't cross sword with the media", meaning don't "play play" with the media cos they can do great damage to you and your products.
there used to be a time when hifi was well-covered by the english media. i am talking about at least 7-8 years ago. we had perfect pitch (sun newspaper) and audiofile (the star newspaper) competing neck to neck in a fun and healthy manner. perfect pitch was technical and serious whereas audiofile was fun and a bit frivolous. audiophiles then had a field day reading both publications. slowly we witnessed the demise of both in the late 90s/early 2000. well, audiofile did not really die but they changed direction. recently, i heard rumours that audiofile intends to focus on hifi again. that is heartening.
being in the media myself, i see a great responsibility in "resuscitating" this industry that has declined substantially compared to the heydays of the mid-90s. hifi magazines in HK, taiwan are so influential that they can make or break a product. HK mags, in particular, are very good in sensationalizing products, which is a good thing if you ask me, never mind that a lot of them are cheer-leading literature.
i am a newbie in publishing. i am good in listening, biasing my tubes, positioning speakers but i really am new in managing a magazine. all i know is i can't do a TAS or stereophile equivalent in malaysia, not that i am capable of it in the first place. i don't think there is a place for a "hardcore" hifi magazines anymore. those days are long gone. on the other hand, i don't know what the mass readers want today. (note: the keyword here is "mass". TAS and stereophile are not mass).
i am slowing climbing the rope to see what malaysian readers want. i will keep changing and reshaping until i find something palatable and acceptable to the malaysian readers. in fact, this issue of av xpress is a great leap forward in terms of contents and positioning.
i am hoping that one day - in the not-to-distant future - people will regard av xpress as the "audio vox" of malaysian hifi.
it is still a long, long way but do not underestimate the power of media.
av xpress issue #2 will hit the street in the last week of april (barring unforseen circumstances)! the delay is caused by a mini revamp, arising from dealers' feedback.
we are confident that you will be pleasantly suprised to see the new look and contents.
the following changes have taken place:
1) widened distribution network
we have appointed, vishal, the biggest magazine distributor in malaysia, to distribute av xpress nationwide. vishal has more than 2,500 agents in malaysia, including those in east malaysia. in doing so, the magazine now costs a nominal price of RM2.00. RM1.50 will go to the distributor and sub-agents, this is just to incentivise them, as av xpress does not intend to make money from the magazine sales at this point in time.
2) limited free copies in record shops
by distributing av xpress in record shops, we are afraid we may not hit the target audience (i.e. buyers) so we are going to limit the number of free copies in rock corner, tower records and victoria music. it is still available for free but you have to be early.
3) addition of a new section called "audio gadgets"
as av xpress aims to promote all forms of audio to the mass market, we have included a new section focusing on audio gadgets - ipods, zune, MP3 etc etc. this will appeal to those younger readers with wide-ranging interests.
4) addition of a bilingual (chinese) section
yes, we know (read and write) chinese too! these articles in chinese should appeal to the chinese literate readers among you, especially those from ipoh, jb and penang.
5) addition of a new section called "new products"
many readers and dealers have asked for this section to display the latest and hottest products that hit the shelves. yes, we are listening!
6) a new format
as we have promised, we will keep improving! the new format is refreshing and easy to read. we are sure that you will like it.
please inform your friends - especially those from inter-state and east malaysia - that av xpress will hit the bookstores and newsagents end of this month! if possible, please forward this link to them.
please support av xpress and the local audio industry!
